Tourism: The Area's Largest Industry
The Traverse City market area accounts for close to 10 percent of the states' travel volume with Grand Traverse County ranking second among Michigan counties in the number of pleasure trips hosted. Visitors to the Traverse City area (Antrim, Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties) have a tremendous impact on the area's economy. More than 1.2 million overnight visitors stayed in commercial accommodations in 1998. Add in "day trippers" and those staying with friends or relatives and the total jumps to over 2.3 million visitors a year. These visitors pump over $530 million into the region's economy each year.
The Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau's work translates into jobs. About 11,000 area residents are directly employed in the tourism industry making it the single largest industry employer in the region.
Besides benefiting businesses and employees directly involved in tourism, indirect business is generated for other industries through tourism -- like health care, building construction and community services. The tourism industry, in short, is central to the area's continuing growth and financial health.
